BeReal is a French social media platform created in 2020 by two recent college graduates. And success came quickly! Even though TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat remain must-haves, BeReal offers a unique concept: finding out what our contacts are up to through a shared, unedited photo posted at a random time.
This social network breaks new ground by emphasizing authenticity through the sharing of candid photos among friends or family members. Every day, at a different time, BeReal users receive a notification. They then have 2 minutes (and not a second more) to share a snapshot of what they’re doing. During this short period, users can view all the photos posted by other participants in thischallenge.
OnBeReal, therefore, no preparation or staging is possible. Users can only share the spontaneous reality of their daily lives, wherever they happen to be when the app allows them to post. But that’s not the only restriction! The app also limits usage time to two short minutes.
And it's working! The platform has climbed to No. 5 on the App Store's top downloads list in the social networking category and has racked up more than 100,000 downloads on the Play Store.
This trendy app has several features that will let you enjoy everything it has to offer:
- The camera: It has the unique feature of taking two photos at once—one of what's in front of you and a selfie;
- Comments: to chat with friends and comment on their photos;
- The BeReal map: to see where your friends are when they've posted their BeReal;
- RealMojis: React to a photo using a selfie of yourself.
The platform's developers are reportedly considering the possibility of allowing users to post videos instead of photos on BeReal.
